A Surgery Survivor
Memorial Day weekend just after graduation and Madison got a bit too fancy with her gymnastics.
Tiffany (who is not to be held accountable) had just purchased a second-hand picture frame that she was very excited to use. In her anticipation she had set it on the stair bannister.
Along came Madison and she started doing handstands on the stairs, kicking higher and higher with each attempt. Finally she lost her balance and crashed forwards, her knee catching the frame, dragging it down the bannister until her knee smashed through the glass. Madison’s first reaction were the words “I am not ok!”
I was around the corner in my office. I heard the shattering glass and was on my feet in seconds. I scooped Madison up and ran for the garage. We put pressure on her wound and Tiffany sped her off to the hospital. One of those moments when you’re happy Tiff has a fast car!
In the emergency room they brought her in for surgery to remove as much glass as possible. However, shortly after surgery they realized there’s a sac of fluid in her knee that, if punctured, would need to be sanitized to prevent infection. With that miserable news they opened Madison’s knee up a second time, this time getting all the way down to make sure there was no infection and stitched her back up.
Madison came home and was still willing to smile for the camera. She’s looking forward to a year from now when she’ll feel comfortable getting sun on her leg!
