Responsible

I’ve probably talked about this before, but Madison is so far beyond her years.

I can remember years ago playing at a park when Drew was probably two, so Madison would have been five or so. There were a number of kids who were all Drew’s age, and Madison was tending to them, keeping them away from the nearby stream, keeping them entertained, keeping them safe.

After awhile Tiffany pointed out that there was a group of girls there that were Madison’s age, some of her friends. We asked Madison if she wanted to play with her friends as they were going over to the other side of the park. Madison declined. She said she would rather look after her brother.

That’s her approach. She’s the watcher, the mother, the tender.

Tonight the kids were riding bikes and scooters around the quad (our local block) and the neighbor’s boy, Jace, who is three wanted to tag along. The neighbor asked his oldest son to go with them and keep an eye on them. If he knew just how closely Madison was keeping an eye on Jace, I don’t think he would have any room for concern. I saw it each time she took a corner, as she looked back to check on her flock of goslings trailing behind her. She’s a leader, but she leads by caring for those coming behind her.
